Celebration Season: From Southwest Michigan Wine Country to a Hidden Speakeasy Near Chicago
There is a moment toward the end of summer when the vineyard begins to change.
The days are still warm, but the evenings arrive a little earlier. The fruit tells us harvest is getting closer. And calendars begin filling with something else: birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, dinners and gatherings that somehow feel more important as another season begins.
At Mahan Family Wines, we've started calling it Celebration Season.
And this year, it arrives at an interesting moment for Michigan wine.
The Daily Herald recently declared that “Southwest Michigan wine country is ready for its close-up,” describing a region less than two hours from Chicago that is gaining attention for its vineyards, winemakers and distinctly Michigan sense of place.
We know that landscape well.
It's home to Granite Ridge Vineyard—and part of the story behind Mahan Family Wines.
Wine Tastes Better When You Know Where It Comes From
For years, we've believed that wine should tell you something about where it came from.
At Granite Ridge Vineyard, that connection begins in the vineyard—with the soil, the changing Lake Michigan seasons, the decisions made throughout the growing year and, ultimately, the fruit we bring to harvest. It is one thing to open a bottle of wine. It is another to walk between the vines and understand the place and work behind what's in your glass.
That's one reason a recent Daily Herald story about Southwest Michigan wine country resonated with us. The article describes a growing interest among wine drinkers in knowing where their grapes come from and how they are farmed—the same connection to agriculture and place that people increasingly expect from the food on their table.
We see that connection every day at Granite Ridge.
Southwest Michigan benefits from the influence of Lake Michigan, which helps moderate the climate and contributes to a growing region with a long agricultural history. The Lake Michigan Shore and Fennville AVAs form the heart of Michigan's oldest commercial wine region, and a new generation of growers and winemakers is now exploring just how distinctive wines from this part of the country can be.
For us, however, wine country isn't simply a place on a map.
It's walking the vineyard with a glass in your hand. It's watching another vintage take shape. It's gathering around a harvest table as the sun begins to disappear behind the vines.
And perhaps most importantly, it's knowing that the bottle on the table has a story that began long before the cork was pulled..
Celebration Season Doesn't End at the Vineyard
Of course, not every bottle is opened among the vines.
About 90 miles away, back near Chicago, there's another place where the Mahan story unfolds.
You just have to know which door to open.
Behind the Secret Door at Mahan Speakeasy, wine country takes on a different personality. Vineyard rows give way to candlelight. Harvest tables become intimate dinner tables. And the reason for gathering shifts from what's happening in the vineyard to what's happening in our lives.
A birthday.
An anniversary.
An engagement.
A bridal shower.
A long-overdue dinner with the people who somehow never seem to be in the same room at the same time.
Or perhaps no milestone at all.
Sometimes “just because” is reason enough.
That's what we mean by Celebration Season.
Fall has always felt like a natural season for gathering. Summer travel begins to slow, calendars change and we find ourselves returning to the table—with friends, family and people we'd like to see more often.
The vineyard may be where our wine story begins.
The table is where it becomes yours.

That question is becoming increasingly important at Mahan Speakeasy.
Our hidden room was never meant to feel like an ordinary wine bar—and we're leaning further into what makes it different.
Increasingly, Mahan Speakeasy is becoming a place reserved for private celebrations: intimate dinners, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, showers, corporate gatherings and evenings created around the people you choose to bring through the Secret Door.
It means we're also changing the way we're open to the public.
Rather than opening every weekend, Mahan Speakeasy now opens to the public on select evenings, while more of the calendar becomes available for private gatherings.
